This year FLUCTU-8 festival will focus on the theme cultivate. Our aim is to find work that inspires a sense of community. We have interpreted this in numerous ways throughout the festival including the inclusive nature of our application process and team and the use of disused and varied

spaces.

The recent local election which saw the divisive anti-immigration UKIP lose 123 seats only winning three seats in Derby. This highlights the need to encourage inclusivity and the exploration of Derby’s diverse community. We hope to achieve this with our commitment to supporting underrepresented groups in the arts including BAME, working class, LGBTQI+ and disabled creatives to present the varied lives and perspectives that make up Derby.

All the members of our team identify with one or more of these groups and we hope the work exhibited will encourage much needed debate and discussion about our diverse community. We aspire to cultivate new talent by providing space and opportunities for graduate and emerging artists and creatives. This year we have graduates and students from varied disciplines including Fine Art, Graphic Design, Politics and Sociology contributing to the festival all committed to cultivating our community to promote a sense of belonging and a more connected society.

By utilising disused spaces in the city centre and building partnerships with other organisations throughout Derbyshire we aim to make contemporary art more accessible to the public. This year’s festival includes live art residencies at Derby Museum and Gallery in the new World Cultures Project. The developing permanent space inclusively explores how local and global citizenship combine to create communities through historical artefacts. We are also partnering with Level Centre who work with creatives with learning disabilities to create diverse exhibitions. They offer a contemporary arts space with facilities and resources usually only found in cities this allows us to connect with those who do not have access to the city.
