World Cultures Project

Launching one of our chosen exhibition spaces: Derby Museum and Gallery, here we plan to showcase ten artists in the new Co-produced World Cultures Project space. Our aim is to create interactive and immersive work that integrates with various artefacts on display to create an engaging experience. The artists will be working live in the space from August 16th-19th producing forwards thinking work based on our exhibition theme 'Cultivate.' This echo's the mission of Derby Museum and Gallery set forward by the opening of the new World Cultures Gallery.

A few weeks ago, members of the FLUCTU-8 team were able to visit the space. The project is still in development but is open to the public during the ‘project lab phase’ to encourage them to get involved and create a co-produced exhibition which is relevant to peoples lives today within a global, historical context. Those who remember how the space used to be will be surprised by the bright, and modern exhibition now on offer.

The gallery aims to ‘engage people’s heads, hearts and hands by exploring multiple narratives of objects’ through numerous ways including pegs which express feelings perhaps not usually associated with the object on display which are placed throughout the exhibition to change perspectives. The public are encouraged to interact and change the pegs to express how the object makes them feel. There are also masks that when worn change the perspective of the viewer of the entire gallery this creates a space to understand and reflect on the objects and their historical and contemporary meaning.

The opening night also featured bongo lessons and henna tattoos for everyone which along with the artefacts reflected the diverse communities in Derby. The developing space offers communities the chance to reflect on the development of Derby and where we fit within that. Tony Butler, Executive of Derby Museums believes that ‘In a time of political turmoil, we think it is vital to explore how local and global citizenship come together’ this space aims to achieve that, and we look forward to contributing to this inclusive gallery.

The open space has been created with the community in mind with quiet spaces to relax, space to contribute ideas and many workshops designed to engage Derby’s community.
